Gameplanet operates an IRC server in New Zealand as part of the EnterTheGame (ETG) IRC network. ETG is the largest gaming IRC network outside Europe.

To get started with IRC you can use the Java IRC client provided at the top of this page. (Requires IE4 or Netscape 4 or newer. Make sure you say "Yes" when your browser requests security verification to allow the applet to run.)

  • For more advanced usage we recommend using a standalone IRC client application such as Bersirc or mIRC.

To connect to the NZ ETG server, you need to add the server address NewZealand.enterthegame.com to your IRC client's server list, or type /server NewZealand.enterthegame.com to connect manually. If you have any trouble with that address you can also try irc.gameplanet.co.nz or connect to a random ETG worldwide server through irc.enterthegame.com.

  • What is IRC? IRC stands for "Internet Relay Chat," and is the standard Internet protocol for chat services. An IRC network is a collection of IRC servers which communicate with each other, so that a user on any server in the network can talk with any other user on any other server in the network.

After you connect to an IRC server, you then join or create a channel (or, chat room) to talk with like-minded users about a particular topic. Channel names begin with the # symbol. For example, the Gameplanet general gaming channel is called #gameplanet.

  • ETG is gaming-oriented, which means all channels must be about gaming-related topics. Warez (software piracy) and pornography channels are specifically not allowed.

    Channels

Here are some New Zealand gaming channels on ETG:

    #gameplanet Gameplanet general gaming channel
    #csnz Counter-Strike NZ
    #ps2nz PlayStation 2 NZ

  • You can create a new channel just by joining it (type /join #name). If you want to keep that channel permanently, you will need to register it by talking to an ETG admin in #etg. If you do create an NZ-related gaming channel on ETG, let us know and we may add it to the list above!

There are heaps of things you can do on IRC which are beyond the scope of this page. Here are some useful sites worth checking out for more information about ETG and using IRC:

The NZ ETG server is operated by Gameplanet with the assistance of TelstraClear.
